“I know the danger of beauty to these men.”

Basij female psychologist warning Neda against her beauty

One year ago an Iranian police bullet transformed Neda Agha-Soltan from an ordinary young woman into an international icon for freedom.  The film of her death reached the world in minutes. Now, one year later, Saeed Kamali Dehghan, another courageous young Iranian, brings us the story of her life. The HBO production is scheduled for release on June 14, but we found an early release.

Protesters march for Moussavi - 17 September, 2009

In spite of merciless government reprisals for the tens of thousands who protested the June election fraud, Iranian men and women, young and old again take the to streets in several cities. Friday, thousands marched and chanted anti-Ahmadinejad slogans as they co-opted the government sponsored Al-Qud anti-Israel event. This time they act with even less hope of success and greater knowledge of the brutal consequences.  Even opposition leaders Moussavi and Khatami were not safe from attacks by pro-Ahmadinejad supporters.

We have really got to admire their guts.

IRAN, MUSIC

More music from Iran, this time from Iranian-Texan Fared Shafinury as he wanders the streets of Tehran strumming on his setar, singing what sounds more like praises for the city than a rage against its politics.

IRAN, Shadi Sadr, Soraya M., Women's rights

Shadi Sadr is an Iranian women’s rights activist; but just what is a women’s rights activist ?

snapshot20081221151747

For some of us in the West, the label may conjure up images of militant, bra-burning, feminazi, sexists fighting for some kind of Amazoness Utopia; but in some parts of the world, including many Islamic communities, she is a brave angel of mercy fighting for basic human rights, sometimes for women’s very right to live.

Shadi Sadr

Shadi Sadr is one of the angelic activists, at least when seen through the eyes of anyone other than a religiously empowered misogynist. She is an Iranian woman who writes columns, leads demonstrations, counsels and consoles victims, and challenges cases in court. She is a lawyer with a degree from the University of Tehran and a wife with one daughter. She champions women accused of moral crimes and her passion is to end capital punishment, beginning with the elimination of all executions by stoning.

At this writing Shadi Sadr is being confined for alleged anti-social activities.

Death by stoning, Sadr’s paramount human rights issue, is shockingly presented in the new film,  The Stoning of Soraya M., directed by Iranian-American Cyrus Nowrasteh and based on a 1994 book by French-Iranian journalist Freidoune Sahebjam. World events continue to compete for the top headlines. Obama pressures democrats, Sotomayor indulges republicans, celebrities die, Prime Minister Aso prepares for his party’s Waterloo, the Chinese suppress their Uighur terrorists and Comrade Kim rattles his rusty saber, wars continue in Iraq and Afghanistan while conflicts fester in Pakistan, India and Israel. With so much competition for our attention, we may have trouble keeping our eye on the events in Iran, but for the people there, their crisis does not end with the news cycle.

The resistance to the Ahmadinejad election fraud will not go away. The common chant “We are all Neda” proves to be more than symbolic as the regime rounds up more and more of its opponents. As the opposition leadership staged peaceful protestsduring Friday prayers, one of their greatest voices, Shadi Sadr was taken into custody.

We cannot keep our eyes glued to Iran, but we do have to keep Iran in our vision.

fitzsimmonsAVAAZ.org is solliciting to help keep the Internet lines open in Iran.

We have all been shocked and, let’s be honest, entertained by the clandestine emails and Youtube glimpses of the crisis there.   If you want to keep the news coming through the government blackout it’s time to pay the piper.

Even those who have moved on to some other media circus really have to admit a week of such drama is well worth a modest contribution.

It’s easier than navigating to a Youtube rerun of the Daily Show – just click here – AVAAZ.org – and follow the simple steps.

Please click one for Neda!

Thank You.

Beat It, IRAN, Michael Jackson, MUSIC, They don't really care about us

The news cycle moves on…Iranian nights are eclipsed by Michael mourning; who’d have ever thought an Islamic Persian tyrant would be indebted to an eccentric pop star.  Well, some have had the ingenuity to merge the two news events in a dramatic musical indictment on the repressive regime.  This may be the best tribute to Michael anyone could offer.

Our thanks to snipah66 for the brilliant concept and editing

Mydorood offers a moving montage of the mayhem in Iran brought to life by another one of Michael Jackson’s super hits.
