Duffy performing at Shibuya’s AX on St. Patrick’s Day, 2009.
Tuesday has been the scariest day for me since I first saw Stanley freak out Blanche with his acid rendering of the Tuesday ultimatum. The Norse War God himself couldn’t have pronounced it with more terror. T-U-E-S-D-A-Y!!!! Not, that is, until that other Tuesday in September, 2001.
This week Tuesday finally redeemed itself for me as I played hooky and sneaked off to Tokyo to join my sister Lenne Hardt for Duffy’s Tokyo debut at Shibuya AX. Instead of the rage of Brando or bin Laden, I can now associate the week’s second day with the fresh face and gritty voice of funky Welsh songbird, Duffy. Sharing the experience with, Lenne, my own delightful diva, made it all the more memorable.
Understatement was the keyword for the production — simple stage, scruffy audience, sedate costumes, and (Thank God) subtle choreography; all of which focused the experience on the only thing that really mattered — the voice. Duffy has plenty of soul for a 25-year-old blonde Brit. Give her a couple of years to develop her repertoire and she may very well evolve into a real star and not just another pop singer or programmed production vehicle cum Leona Lewis (aka Brit’s Beyounce).
Thank you Michael for this special Tuesday treat.
